たくさんの人から「ノー」と言われたよ。髪が長すぎたし、ギターの音が大きすぎたんだ。
「The Final Countdown」がハッピーな曲なのか悲しい曲なのかは分からない。ポジティブな雰囲気はあるけど、どこか物悲しい。結婚式でも葬式でも使われる曲なんだ。
それはスカンジナビアの音楽だからだと思う。昔のフィンランドやスウェーデンの音楽では、マイナーコードがとても重要だったからね。
しかし、アイアン・メイデンやUFOといったブリティッシュ・ヘヴィメタルの「疾走感」も兼ね備えている。
プロデューサーは4つ打ちのリズム (a four-on-the-floor rhythm) を望んでいたが、私は自分の信念を貫いた。それではあまりにもストレートすぎる。あの疾走感のあるリズムは、思わず飛び跳ねたくなるような魅力がある。
